- Chimpanzee (often shortened to chimp) is the common name for the two extant species of ape in the genus Pan. The better - known chimpanzee, Pan troglodytes (Common Chimpanzee), lives primarily in West, and Central Africa. Its cousin, Pan paniscus (Bonobo or "Pygmy Chimpanzee") is found only in the forests of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Congo River forming the boundary between the two species.
- Chimpanzees are members of the Hominidae family, along with gorillas, humans, and orang-utans. Humans and the two chimpanzees are all members of the Hominini tribe and these, our sibling species, share with us 98.8 % of their genetic code.
